Economic Blunders
From demonetization to FDI collapse — the numbers that expose the economic destruction.
1.1 — Demonetization (Nov 8, 2016)
The biggest self-inflicted wound in Indian economic history.
The Stated Purpose vs Reality:
| Claim | Reality |
|---|---|
| "Wipe out black money" | 99.3% of money returned to banks (RBI Annual Report 2018) |
| "Stop terrorism funding" | No evidence of reduction |
| "Move to digital economy" | Cash in circulation increased after |
Human Cost: 82+ deaths linked to queues & cash shortages. 1.5 million jobs lost. Employment rate crashed from 42.59% to 41.45%. 40% job losses in age 40-55 segment.
Economic Cost: 1.5-2 percentage point GDP loss. Industrial production declined 20-30%. IMF lowered growth estimate by 1 full percentage point. Sensex fell 6%+ the day after announcement.
1.2 — GST Chaos (July 1, 2017)
- 230,000+ small businesses shut down due to GST compliance burden
- Multiple tax slabs (0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) — opposite of "One Nation, One Tax"
- GST Council met 50+ times in first few years to fix broken rates
- Combined with demonetization, GST "wrecked India's small traders"
1.3 — Banking Scams
| Fraudster | Amount Looted | Bank | Fled To |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nirav Modi | ₹14,357 crore | Punjab National Bank | UK (arrested) |
| Mehul Choksi | ₹7,000+ crore | PNB/Gitanjali Gems | Antigua |
| Vijay Mallya | ₹9,000 crore | Multiple banks | UK |
| ABG Shipyard | ₹22,842 crore | ICICI, SBI, others | India (biggest ever) |
| Rotomac | ₹3,695 crore | Bank of Baroda | India |
Bigger Picture: Banks reported ₹5.35 lakh crore in frauds over ~7.5 years. PSB GNPAs hit ₹8.96 lakh crore (March 2018). Gross NPA ratio went from ~2% in 2008 to over 10% by 2018.
1.4 — Unemployment Crisis
| Metric | Figure | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Overall unemployment (2017-18) | 6.1% | Highest since 1972-73 (45-year high) |
| Previous rate (2011-12) | 2.2% | Nearly tripled |
| Youth unemployment (15-29) | 13-27% | Described as "astronomically high" |
| Youth unemployment (CMIE 2022-23) | 45.4% | 6x the overall rate |
| Jobs lost (2016-17) | 1.5 million | CMIE data |
Government Cover-Up: The NSSO report was withheld. Two National Statistical Commission members resigned in protest (PC Mohanan, JV Meenakshi). Report leaked by Business Standard a day before the interim Budget.
1.5 — Inflation — The Silent Tax
| Fuel | 2014 Price | Peak Price | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol (Delhi) | ~₹71/litre | ₹110+/litre | 55%+ |
| Diesel (Delhi) | ~₹57/litre | ₹101/litre | 78%+ |
| LPG Cylinder | ~₹410 | ₹1,000+ | 143%+ |
Excise Duty Loot: Central excise on petrol: ₹9.48 → ₹32.9/litre (+247%). On diesel: ₹3.56 → ₹31.8/litre (+793%). During COVID (April 2020), when global crude crashed 69%, government raised excise by ₹10 (petrol) and ₹13 (diesel).
1.6 — Farmer Crisis
- BJP 2014 manifesto promised MSP at C2+50% (50% profit over cost) — government implemented A2+FL (cheaper formula) instead
- No legal MSP guarantee enacted as of 2026
- 10,281 farmers/farm labourers died by suicide in 2022 alone — roughly one every hour
- Over 112,000 farmer suicides in the ~10-year period 2014-2022
- 726-750 farmers died during the 13-month protest (Nov 2020 – Nov 2021)
- At least 9 farmer suicides during the farm law protest
1.7 — GDP Manipulation
Arvind Subramanian (former Chief Economic Advisor to Modi government): India's GDP growth overstated by ~2.5 percentage points. Real growth 2012-2017: ~4.5%, not the official ~7%. 2026 update (PIIE): actual growth might be ~3%.
Ashoka Mody (Princeton/World Bank/IMF): India's realistic growth is ~4.5%. The headline 7-8% rests on "statistical sleight-of-hand." Manufacturing data, FDI collapse, and employment figures all contradict the narrative.
1.8 — Rising Inequality
| Metric | Figure | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Top 1% income share (2022-23) | 22.6% | Highest since 1922 |
| Top 1% wealth share (2022-23) | 40.1% | Highest since 1961 |
| Top 10% wealth share | 77.4% | (Oxfam) |
| Bottom 50% income share | 15% | Of all national income |
1.9 — Make in India Failure
Manufacturing share of GDP: 16.7% (2013-14) → 15.9% (2023-24) — a DECLINE. Target was 25%. PLI scheme launched March 2020 "barely moved the needle." Government quietly let it lapse in early 2025.
1.10 — Rupee Collapse
| Date | USD/INR | Context |
|---|---|---|
| May 2014 | ₹59.44 | Modi takes office |
| 2022 | ₹81-82 | |
| March 2026 | ₹99.82 | All-time low |
| July 2026 | ₹96.57 | Current |
Total depreciation: ~63% from ₹59 in 2014 to ~₹97 in 2026. Rupee weakened 11.95% in the last 12 months alone.
1.11 — FDI Collapse
Net FDI fell to just $353 million in FY 2024-25 — one-seventh of the previous lowest in 25 years. Peak net FDI was $44 billion (2020-21). India's share in global FDI: peaked at 6.5% (2020) → crashed to 2.1% (2023). Mauritius (population 1.3 million) remains India's #1 "foreign" investor (25% of inflows) — widely suspected to be round-tripped black money.
Democratic Decline
ED weaponization, Electoral Bonds scam, CJI controversies, press freedom destruction — the systematic capture of Indian institutions.
2.1 — ED Weaponization
| Metric | UPA Era (2004-14) | NDA Era (2014-24) | Increase |

- Arvind Kejriwal (Delhi CM): Arrested March 21, 2024 by ED — first sitting CM arrested by ED. Spent 156 days in jail while serving as CM. Arrested weeks before 2024 elections. Later DISCHARGED of all charges — entire case collapsed.
- Manish Sisodia (Delhi Deputy CM): Arrested Feb 26, 2023. Spent ~530 days (17 months) in custody. Later DISCHARGED/acquitted — charges collapsed.
- Hemant Soren (Jharkhand CM): Arrested Jan 31, 2024 by ED. Resigned before arrest. Later re-elected after winning legal battles.
The Pattern: Three opposition Chief Ministers arrested during election season. The cases collapsed. Lives and careers destroyed. Democracy subverted. Join BJP → case dropped ("washing machine").

| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Total bonds purchased (2018-2024) | ₹12,769 crore |

| Companies purchasing bonds | ~1,300 entities |
| Donors under ED/CBI investigation | Many — quid pro quo pattern |
Feb 15, 2024: Supreme Court struck down Electoral Bonds as unconstitutional — violated Article 19(1)(a). Despite this, Modi defended the scheme. Post-bonds, BJP still received ₹6,088 crore in FY 2024-25 — 171% surge. BJP still ~12x more than Congress.

2.5 — Judiciary Compromised
| CJI | Year | Controversy |
|---|---|---|
| Dipak Misra | 2017-18 | 4 senior judges held unprecedented press conference (Jan 2018) warning democracy under threat. Concerns: allocation of sensitive cases to preferred benches. |

2.8 — CBI Director Midnight Coup
Oct 23, 2018 (~1:00 AM): Modi government invoked obscure rule to send CBI Director Alok Verma on forced leave — called a "midnight coup." Jan 8, 2019: SC reinstated Verma — ruled midnight removal illegal. Jan 10, 2019: Just 48 hours later, PM Modi-led committee voted 2-1 to permanently remove Verma. CJI (Ranjan Gogoi) voted with PM. Verma was later listed as a Pegasus surveillance target.
2.9 — NGO Crackdown
